Survey results 12/21: What issues of concern should Southold Government prioritize (46 responses):

1. Require new developments to have a minimum percentage of plantings and trees to support the environment and our ground water.
2. (Tie) Address uncontrolled deer population causing hazardous driving conditions, increasing environmental degradation and an explosion in tick-borne illnesses.
2. (Tie) Address the needs of those homeless and others In need.
3. Limit the number and/or size of new hotels in Southold.
4. Preserve and create workforce housing, especially for emergency service volunteers.
5. Add protected bicycle paths between hamlets be created to reduce auto use.
6. Maintain the paths in public parks to protect the natural areas.
7. Advocate for frequent train service connect the hamlets to reduce auto use.
8. Reverse the new law Southold just passed allowing houses in the other hamlets to be rented for two nights rather than the previous two weeks to protect year-round rentals. (It was sent to the Planning Dept for further review.)

Is there another issue that should be a top Southold priority?

Others:
1. Fight light pollution
2. Requires the MTA to maintain their train stops. Currently, the Greenport
station railings have remained unpainted for over one year.
3. Stronger Town codes and enforcement
4. More leaf blower restriction
5. Noise!!! This past year was mostly quiet but it will increase again.
6. Anything that impacts our water – overdevelopment, lawn fertilizers and other
pollutants, and replacing old septic systems
7. Enforceable noise ordinances
8. The police need to enforce speed limits and drivers blowing through stop
signs in the Village.
9. Affordable housing for ALL who are in need!!!
10. Protecting our beaches and waters from pollution, run off, for example
making sure trash cans are at beaches not just in summer
11. Traffic reduction and control
12. Town pool
13. Requires the MTA to maintain their train stops. Currently, the Greenport
station railings have remained unpainted for over one year.
14. Incentivize resilience planning, green development, solar adoption, and
greater access to nature including dark sky preservation/reclamation.
15. Replace “public hearings” on critical issues, which often devolve into
unhelpful verbal slugfests, with online town-wide referenda so that more people can/will weigh in before Town Board makes key decisions. 2) Be more creative about finding solutions to Town Hall space needs that won’t burden taxpayers. 3) Make more practical services (snow shoveling, mowing/yard cleanup, handyman help) available to seniors at affordable rates.
16. Noise control
17. We need to protect the Peconic Bay, I’ve been a full time fisherman out here
watching our water collapse year after year. fertilizer, septic etc… all need to be addressed Protecting Our Bay/ Water Quality should be on the top of the list
18. Litter
19. Parking
20. Clean water sources essential and tackling tick diseases essential
21. Support for clean energy
22. Stop unnecessary cutting down of trees on development or homeowners
building plans, and replace any removed, with new Native trees or shrubs.
23. Address the issue of the Arcade on Front Street … either open up or sell or
raise their taxes for doing neither … what an eyesore … and right at the heart
of our Village!
24. Environmental preservation as well as facilitating access to nature is a
priority.
25. Abuse of chemical fertilizers
26. The amount of homeless and people In need. You cannot only care and talk
about wealthy people issues, and want all to care for the same things when
there are people who cannot feed themselves.
27. Year-round rentals should be preserved, AIR b&b should be discouraged.
28. Fixing broken sidewalks and parking.
